President's Message: Winter 2024

Updated: Dec 2

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving, which has started the many upcoming celebrations.  Looking forward to seeing you all on December 7th at noon at the Holly Berry Luncheon at La Pastaria.  It will be a good time to socialize during the holiday season.

If you get a chance, check out the newsletter, Equi{tea}, from AAUW NJ that was mailed to members on November 26th.  Sharon Suber, AAUW NJ President, has a good message for us all.  The newsletter also has lots of good information on the Freedom to Read Act, a recent vote by the Edison Board of Education and upcoming uncertainty about Title IX rules.  The Freedom to Read Act is awaiting Governor Murphy’s signature.  It restricts who can request that books be removed from public school libraries and public libraries and provides protection to librarians from harassment.

The book group met again on Wednesday, November 20th at 2 p.m. at the Broadway Diner.  The book reviewed was Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis, a famous satire about academia in England published in the early 1950s.  A lively discussion took place including a section on how women were portrayed, all while we enjoyed a light lunch, smoothie, dessert, or coffee.  The next meeting will be on December 18th at 2 p.m. at the Broadway Diner.  The book is 97 Orchard: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement, covering a time frame from the 1860s through the 1930s.  This relates to the Tenement Museum located at 103 Orchard Street in NYC which I understand has several good tours although I have not been there yet.

Our January program will be on January 19th at the New Providence Library to view and discuss the film Little Rock Central: Fifty Years Later.  Doors open at 1:30 p.m. with the film starting at 1:45. There's also a virtual program offered by AAUW NJ on January 23 at 7:00 p.m. on Title IX, and what we might expect under the incoming administration.

The play that I mentioned in the September newsletter, The Light and The Dark by Kate Hamill, is currently running at Primary Stages in NYC now through December 15th.  The theater is located at 59 East 59 Street. The subject is the 17th century Italian female painter Artemisia Gentileschi and her battle to be recognized as a painter.

Giving Tuesday is coming up on December 3rd.  You may want to consider a gift then or at any time during the holiday season to Summit College Club (not tax-deductible), Summit College Club Foundation (tax deductible), AAUW NJ, or AAUW National’s Greater Needs Fund.  While we're on the subject of giving: The SCCF board recently approved a donation to the Tech Trek fund this year.

Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Lynne Rogerson, President
